Sydney Morning Herald Political Editor Peter Hartcher says incoming Labor leader Anthony Albanese is taking a ‘hands off’ approach when it comes to the Adani coal mine. Mr Albanese travelled to Queensland on Tuesday, acknowledging that Labor must do more to lift its primary vote in the state. Labor only managed a primary vote of just over 27 per cent in Queensland in the last federal election. Mr Albanese told reporters that the market, not Labor, will determine whether the Adani project will go ahead. That stance differs from his predecessor Bill Shorten, who refused to say whether his party would back the mine if elected, prompting a backlash at the ballot box in north and west Queensland. Mr Hartcher told Sky News that the Labor leader ‘removed any ambiguity’ about whether ‘meddle’ with the approval of the mine.
