February 4, 2020. The National Party whip announces that the leadership spill has been decided with Michael McCormack, the incumbent leader re-elected after former leader Barnaby Joyce challenged for the top job. David Littleproud was elected the new deputy leader of the Nationals. National party convention does not disclose the voting numbers of the candidates. Former Resources Minister Matt Canavan who publicly backed Mr Joyce will not be back into cabinet. “Matt Canavan has resigned his commission as Resources Minister, and I wish him all the best,” Mr McCormack says.
