Drone Footage Shows Cascading Lava Flows on La Palma

Authorities reported on October 31 that seismic activity in the vicinity of La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano was decreasing, but said the flow of lava continued unabated. As of the morning of October 30, lava had claimed some 970 hectares (roughly 3.75 square miles) on the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Analyzing imagery, scientists with Copernicus determined that 2,562 buildings on La Palma have been destroyed by volcanic activity since eruptions began on September 19. Joe Biden’s presidency is ‘dying a slow death’

Joe Biden's presidency is "dying a slow death", says Political Analyst Professor Joe Siracusa. It comes amid meetings between G20 leaders in Rome and the upcoming Glasgow Climate summit. "The world is dying a death of a thousand cuts here," Prof Siracusa told Sky News Australia. "There isn't going to be any climate change accord, no one wants to put up their oil or their fossil fuels or any of that or coal – look it's just not going to happen. "I think the thing that the leaders can do right now is sort of manage the expectations. "People have been led to believe that a lot of great things can happen – the G20 clearly did not go down that road – the main reason is that Joe Biden was very damaged when he got there. "His presidency was damaged – in fact he's dying a slow death too. "This morning – 54 per cent of Americans said they didn't have any trust in him and 71 per cent said America was going in the wrong direction. "So Biden is not going to be able to be a major factor here."

The handshake Scott Morrison ‘had to have’

The handshake Scott Morrison "had to have" occurred between the Prime Minister and French President Emmanuel Macron amid the G20 summit in Rome, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. "So Morrison, having received a call from Emmanuel Macron in a tense conversation delaying his flight to the G20, going up and approaching the French leader and seeking some form of reproachment. "But it was interesting to see Joko Widodo (Indonesian leader), who met Scott Morrison early this morning Rome time, then had a bilateral meeting with Emmanuel Macron, tweeted both of those meetings. Facebook name change an attempt to ‘direct attention away’ from investigations

Mark Zuckerberg changing Facebook's name to 'Meta' is an attempt to direct attention away from all the investigations the company has had into its operations this last year, according to Cypress College's Professor Peter Matthews. "It was one of the worst years for Facebook as far as PR goes," Prof Matthews told Sky News Australia. "And he's now trying to come up with something called a Metauniverse, the Metaverse." The 'metaverse' is a shared 3D virtual space whereby, according to Mr Zuckerberg, users will be able to "teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up", he wrote in a letter announcing Facebook's rebranding to Meta. "I'm not even sure what's that all about other than distract people from the real issues of the day," Prof Matthews said. "We should be focusing on the real world and what's going on right now, as challenging enough to be lost in some metaverse."

GOP’s Adam Kinzinger, Outspoken Trump Critic, Says He Won’t Seek Re-Election to Congress

Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Illinois’ 16th District known for his outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump, announced in a video on Friday, October 29, that he would not be seeking re-election to the House in 2022. Kinzinger, formerly a lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force, cited tribalism, extremism, and the polarized nature of the American political system as factors in his decision, though he did not mention any political party or politician by name in the near-5-minute message. “Our political parties only survive by appealing to the most motivated and the most extreme elements within it,” Kinzinger says in the video, "and the price tag to power has skyrocketed, and fear and distrust has served as an effective strategy to meet that cost. “Dehumanizing each other has become the norm,” Kinzinger continues. "We’ve taken it from social media to the streets. We’ve allowed leaders to reach power selling the false premise that strength comes from degrading others, and dehumanizing those that look, act, or think differently than we do. “As a country, we’ve fallen for those lies and now we face a poisoned country filled with outrage blinding our ability to achieve real strength,” Kinzinger says. “We must unplug from the mistruths we’ve been fed,” he added. Kinzinger says he could more effectively engage in a “broader fight nationwide” to “break the narrative” without having to pursue a re-election campaign at the same time. Toward the end of the video, he promotes the “Country First” political action committee (PAC) he founded in the wake of January 6, saying Americans needed to “reclaim our country from the dividers, the corrupt, and the cynical.” Credit: Adam Kinzinger via Storyful

Macron: Scott Morrison ‘broke relationship of trust’ with AUKUS alliance

French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of breaking the "relationship of trust" between the two nations by signing up to the AUKUS alliance. Macron: Scott Morrison ‘broke relationship of trust’ with AUKUS alliance

French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of breaking the "relationship of trust" between the two nations by signing up to the AUKUS alliance. The relationship between the two nations deteriorated after the Commonwealth scrapped its $90 billion deal with French-based Naval Group in favour of acquiring US nuclear submarines under the agreement. The candid phone call was the first direct communication between the pair since the saga, which initially prompted Paris to recall its ambassador from Canberra. Mr Macron says the onus now falls onto the prime minister to mend the broken relationship. “It is now up to the Australian government to propose tangible actions that embody the political will of Australia’s highest authorities to redefine the basis of our bilateral relationship and continue joint action in the Indo-Pacific,” the Elysee Palace statement said.

Santa Fe Officials Recover Bullet Discharged by Alec Baldwin on Film Set of Rust

New Mexico officials said during a press conference in Santa Fe on October 27 that they have recovered a bullet believed to have been fired by Alec Baldwin from a prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film set of Rust. This livestream footage shows Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies speaking during the briefing. A lead projectile has been removed from the shoulder of director Joel Souza, who was injured at the scene on October 21, according to Mendoza. Investigators have collected three firearms, including the gun they believe was fired by Baldwin, along with the spent shell casing of the fired bullet, Mendoza said. About 500 rounds of ammunition including blanks, dummy rounds, and suspected live rounds were also collected. Mendoza said there is camera footage from the scene, but no footage of the actual shooting. According to court documents, assistant director Dave Halls handed the gun to Baldwin, who was told it was safe, when in fact it was loaded with live rounds. Investigators said Halls did not know there were live rounds in the gun when he gave it to Baldwin. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had “handled and or inspected” the firearm prior to Baldwin firing the weapon, Mendoza said. It is too early in the investigation to comment on charges, Mendoza said. All options, including criminal charges, are on the table at this point, Carmack-Altwies said. Credit: Santa Fe County Sheriff via Storyful

Net zero commitment will ‘protect Australians’: PM Morrison

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says there is “nothing” in the federal government’s net zero by 2050 plan which takes away jobs and money or increases electricity prices. The federal government on Tuesday committed Australia to net zero emissions by 2050 ahead of the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. “Everything we’re doing under our plan is just encouraging Australians to do what they’re already doing,” Mr Morrison told Sky News host Paul Murray. “We’re not telling people what cars they can buy or what choices they have to make, that’s not our plan, that’s what the Labor Party does. “A commitment to achieve net zero by 2050 I said I would only ever contemplate if we had a plan that enabled us to achieve it, and what we’ve been able to determine is that can happen without taxes, without mandating anything, keeping the lights on, and making sure we’re very open and transparent about what the impacts are.” The Prime Minister said he needs to “protect Australia” from the impacts of decisions being made overseas. “Decisions being made in other parts of the world are going to have an impact here,” he said. “Our plan helps us both protect Australians from that, and recognise the opportunities so we can succeed as we have all along.”

Prime Minister: Nuclear energy not an option ‘right now’

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says bipartisan support would be needed for nuclear energy to be an option in the pathway to net zero emissions by 2050. “Right now, the Labor Party are totally opposed to it,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray. “I’m just not going to put Australia through the argument which doesn’t get us anywhere because the moratorium isn’t lifted. “And for the Labor Party to run around at the next election and get themselves elected on the basis of a scare campaign. That’s just what would happen.” Mr Morrison said he’s not prepared to hand the Labor Party “that sort of an opportunity”. “They’re opposed to it, they don’t ever want to consider it they say,” he said. “Unless there’s a bipartisan commitment to this, then it will be too difficult to proceed with at this point. “But we’ll see what happens down the track.”

Australia is going to ‘smash’ its 2030 climate targets: Tim Wilson

Liberal MP Tim Wilson says the public is projecting Australia will "smash" its 2030 climate target early than expected. “We’ve already outlined a 2030 target at the last election that was endorsed by the Australian people,” Mr Wilson told Sky News Australia. “Of course, we know that there are going to be projections against a trajectory of Australia cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 released shortly of all of the information that’s already in the public square. “Everybody is projecting we’re not just going to meet; we’re going to beat; we’re going to smash our targets for 2030 early. “Australia’s emissions are going down and the reason we’re having this conversation is because Australia takes commitments and delivers on them and cuts its emissions and is making sure that they continue to go down.”
