Riot Police Deployed as Bosnians Protest Over Student’s Death

Dozens of riot police confronted citizens demonstrating in the northwestern Bosnian city of Banja Luka on December 30 over the unexplained death of a 21-year-old student earlier in the year. Police forced back protesters who were marching through the city square demanding the resignation of Bosnian Serb Interior Minister Dragan Lukac and top police officials over the March death of David Dragicevic. Police initially said Dragicevic’s death was a suicide, but the student’s family insisted he was killed. Prosecutors have opened a homicide investigation, the AP said. Dragicevic’s father, Davor Dragicevic, inspired the protests as he has continued to push for answers about the circumstances of his son’s death. Dragicevic said he would not leave the city’s main square until police officers involved in his son’s case resigned or were fired. A group of protesters who remained after the rally ended clashed with police. Local media reported several protesters were arrested. Credit: Goran Arbutina via Storyful
