Lowy Institute’s Lydia Khalil says anti-government protests in Baghdad are “part of a big trend of protests around the world". Ms Khalil told Sky News the protests - which began in October - were in response to “great dissatisfaction with the current and previous Iraqi government” and were “largely self-mobilised mass movement protests led by young people”. She said protesters were demanding political reform “against corruption, the basic lack of services, and employment opportunities". “These have been the largest protests since the 2003 Second Gulf War” and the violence and death toll of more than 300 is “extremely concerning,” she said.
