Firefighters on high alert as conditions deteriorate in NSW, Qld and SA

Firefighters in New South Wales are preparing for another day of tough conditions as dry and windy weather sweeps across parts of the state. Air pollution in Sydney reached 15 times the hazardous level after strong winds dragged smoke from a nearby fire at Gospers Mountain into the Sydney basin on Tuesday. Meanwhile in Queensland, a bushfire in Pechey flared up on Monday, forcing residents to flee their homes. In South Australia, a total fire ban has been declared as the state prepares for a day of 'catastrophic' fire conditions on Wednesday. With Adelaide expected to reach 42 degrees on Wednesday, residents are being urged to leave their homes if not prepared to defend them. Image: Getty
