Police Use Water Cannons to Disperse Protesters in Santiago

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators who descended upon the streets of Santiago, Chile, during the 14th consecutive day of protests. The demonstrators rallied in attempts to combat the cost of living and transportation fare increases in the area. While the fare increase has been suspended, the protests have broadened to issues of economic inequality and have called for the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera. At least 20 people have died, hundreds have been injured and more than 2,000 demonstrators arrested since the protests began, according to reports. On Wednesday, Chilean president Sebastian Piñera announced that the decision was made to cancel the upcoming APEC Trade Summit and Conference of the Parties (COP) events that were due to be held in Chile in November and December respectively. This video, taken from the Plaza Baquedano in Santiago shows demonstrators throwing items at police vehicles, and the authorities using water to combat the demonstrators.
