Beef could be the 'surprise winner' of a critical pork shortage according to meat and livestock analyst Simon Quilty. More than a quarter of the world's pigs have been wiped out due to African swine fever spreading across the world. Domestic authorities are concerned the disease, while not harmful to humans, will devastate Australia's pig population. Mr Quilty told Sky News the pork industry is not expecting to recover for another three to five years. He said Australian farmers, despite struggling with drought, are taking advantage of the pork shortage to export their own beef.
