Relaxation of restrictions ‘not an invitation for a holiday’: NSW Premier

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has called on residents to "please respect the rules" as the government moves to ease social distancing restrictions, adding the relaxations are not an invitation for a holiday. "The reasons why we're allowing people to come into other people's households is to extend the definition of care," she said. The premier announced on Tuesday the state would allow up to two adults - with the exception of children - to visit other NSW households in a move that aims to reduce social isolation and improve mental health. "We know so many people in our community have been locked up in their homes for weeks on end. We thank them for it. Premier Berejiklian said she still expected "every family" to have conversations about what form the "new arrangements" would take in their particular set of circumstances. "I'll still be standing outside the house and not going inside my parents' home when I visit them because I'm still in contact with a lot of people and I don't want to put them at risk." "We don't want to see families unnecessarily go through grief." There is currently no limit on the distance someone may travel to visit loved ones. The premier urged NSW residents to maintain vigilance despite the changes to ensure the government would not be required to reinforce measures previously scaled back due to a second wave of infection.
