World Health Organisation admits it never probed Chinese wet markets or labs

The World Health Organisation has admitted none of its experts visited the wet market or the Wuhan laboratories during a fact-finding mission to China in February. Only three of 25 WHO experts who visited China in February even travelled to Wuhan, at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organisation's spokesman, Margaret Harris, has admitted to Sky News host Sharri Markson, in a special investigation titled What is China Hiding. The three international members of the joint mission who went to Wuhan were Bruce Aylward, Chikwe Ihekweazu and Tim Eckmanns. WHO confirmed to Sky News that they did not visit either the wet market or the Wuhan laboratories that dealt with bat-derived coronaviruses. Ms Harris would not respond to a question about whether they had actually sought permission from Chinese authorities to go to the wet market. “The focus of the mission was on learning from the response, not looking at the origin, so the wet market, lab, etc were not on the agenda,” she said. Ms Harris said the disease was rampant and highly-infectious in February so it was unsafe for the WHO experts to travel to Wuhan. China is accused of bleaching the wet market stalls before any independent assessments could be undertaken. The fact-finding mission went from February 10 until February 24, 2020.

Chinese lab experimented on ‘highly pathogenic viruses’ days before COIVD-19 outbreak

THE Wuhan Institute of Virology was given permission to engage in experimental research involving highly-pathogenic viruses just 10 days before the first recorded case of COVID-19. A Sky News special investigation can reveal the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s level 3 laboratory, where Shi Zhengli is director, had just been given permission by the Chinese Government to conduct even risker experiments on November 7, 2019. This was 10 days before the South China Morning Post cites the first recorded case of COVID-19 on November 17, and weeks before the outbreak of the pandemic. The new level of research is confirmed in three documents, including a statement from the director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which states: “Wuhan National Biosafety (Level 3) laboratory was officially qualified for experimental activities, and has the ability and conditions to carry out experimental activities of highly pathogenic microorganisms” A separate document from the Chinese Academy of Sciences states: “On November 7, 2019, the National Health Commission formally approved the Wuhan National Institute of Biological Safety (Level 3) Laboratory of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences to engage in experimental activities of highly pathogenic pathogenic microorganisms. “The application has undergone data review and on-site evaluation and demonstration, and approved the activity qualification.” Shi Zhengli is the vice-chairwoman of the level 4 laboratory as well as the director of the level 3 laboratory. It is understood that most coronavirus research takes place in level 3 laboratories. The order meant the laboratory could start to engage in more experimental activities with “highly pathogenic microorganisms” such as the “Ebola virus, Niba virus, Marburg virus, Lassa fever virus… the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacillus anthracis and the tick-borne encephalitis virus.” Sky News is not suggesting that the laboratory is responsible in anyway for the outbreak. It comes as the director of China’s Centre for Disease Control, Gao Fu, told Chinese state media that the wet market played a role in spreading the virus but it was not the origin of the outbreak. “At first, we assumed the seafood market might have the virus, but now the market is more like a victim,” he told the Global Times. He said samples collected from animals in the market in early January did not contain traces of the virus. “The novel coronavirus had existed long before.”

NSW easing of restrictions ‘a gamechanger’

From Monday New South Wales venues can serve 50 customers. Restrictions on weddings, funerals and church services will also ease in New South Wales from this week, with up to 20 permitted. “To have 10 patrons in a venue that takes 800 to 1,000 is quite difficult,” Mr Green told Sky News, referring to previous restrictions in the state. “But when you’re talking about 50 patrons it means we can start to get our staff back into employment. “Our members tell us it will be about 44,000 (staff) from this week back into employment.” Image: Getty

Racism ‘in the DNA of certain nations’

The United States is experiencing a repeat of the civil rights protests and the anti-war movement from the 1960s when about 25 cities burned – a response to deep-seated racism which public policy legislation could help remedy, RMIT University Professor Joe Siracusa says. “We have a perfect storm here: we have the denial of justice to a man who was killed in front of social media at a time of social claustrophobia from the pandemic,” he told Sky News. “This is about institutional racism. This is showing a lot of Americans things have to be done now. “You can’t make racism go away overnight, it might even be in the DNA of certain nations, but you can, of course, legislate public policy, you could legislate what the police can do and what they can’t do. “Every time a policeman kills somebody in custody, police unions complain that nothing should happen and the Supreme Court gives the police a little bit of leeway, and this is something that has to be dealt with in terms of legislation.” Image: AP

Big tech’s anti conservative bias ‘well documented’

Sky News host Rita Panahi says Twitter's decision to 'fact check' Donald Trump shows social media's "double standards in policing speech" where "conservatives are banned for infractions that don’t seem to apply to hard Left account holders who can spew all sorts of defamatory abuse and threats." Earlier this week Twitter fact checked US President Donald Trump’s account, adding a warning label on two of his tweets regarding mail in ballots and voter fraud with a link to a CNN factcheck. “And while Twitter targets Trump it allows the deranged, genocidal rants of Iran's supreme leader even though Twitter is banned in the Islamic Republic,” Ms Panahi said. “Twitter also seems untroubled by Chinese government propagandists spreading crazy conspiracy theories about the origins of COVID-19 on their platform”. “Accidentally misgender a dude with a full beard who identifies as a pixie and you'll be suspended quick smart but any sort of deranged abuse of conservatives is considered fair game,” she said. “If Twitter wants to behave like a publisher then it should be treated like one. “It can't pretend to be a neutral platform when it exerts editorial control including selective fact checking, shadow-banning and other underhanded forms of censorship that are almost always targeted at conservatives.” Image: AP

Far-left ‘fuelling’ violent protests across US

Far-left groups, including Antifa, are stoking violence and engaging in “mindless lawlessness” under the guise of protesting police brutality, according to Sky News host Rita Panahi. A state of emergency has been declared in Georgia and the National Guard has been called in as violence spreads to 30 cities across the United States over the death of George Floyd. Mr Floyd was an unarmed black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes as he told them "I can't breathe". US President Donald Trump has urged officials in Minnesota to “get tougher” on protestors, as officers brace for a fifth night of unrest in Minneapolis. His death has been condemned from across the political spectrum, with the officer who knelt on Mr Floyd's neck, Derek Chauvin, charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Ms Panahi said while some people are protesting peacefully, many are “straight out rioters and thugs.”

America ‘is profoundly troubled’

Donald Trump is unable to provide the unifying leadership America needs as it grapples with profound social, economic and health crises, according to The Australian's Paul Kelly, America has been plunged into disarray overnight, with a state of emergency declared in Georgia and the National Guard has been called in as violence spreads to 30 cities across the United States over the death of George Floyd. Mr Floyd was an unarmed black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes as he told them "I can't breathe". Riots have broken out across the US, with protesters setting police cars alight and smashing small businesses' windows as police struggle to maintain order. The violence, sparked by Mr Floyd's death, comes as the death toll from the novel COVID-19 passes 100,000. Unemployment has surged as governments shut down large swathes of the economy, with 40 million Americans filing for jobless claims. Mr Kelly told Sky News the recent tumult has shown America is a "profoundly troubled" society. "We have had more than 100,000 Americans die as a result of this pandemic," he said. "The tribulations that has caused right across the country in terms of households and political systems is really deep seated. "Unemployment in America is the highest it has been since the Great Depression...and the prospect is things will get worse, the economy will get worse, the unemployment level will get worse. And then we have the flawed leadership of Donald Trump, and that tweet he sent out 'when the looting starts, the shooting stars', this is a president who cannot provide unified leadership and this point in time and I think that is another real problem."

Image-based abuse cases increase by 200 per cent during coronavirus lockdown

ESafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant says her office has seen a 200 per cent increase in image-based abuse cases since the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown. Ms Grant said image-based abuse – the sharing of intimate photos or videos without consent – was “a devastating experience” for its victims – 70 per cent of whom were women. She said the 200 per cent increase in cases, while devastating, “makes sense because more people are seeking intimacy through digital means” during lockdown. Ms Grant said technology-facilitated abuse was an extension of domestic and family violence, adding in some cases “we’ve got women and children trapped with their captors”. Ms Grant urged anyone who believed they were a victim of image-based abuse to contact the eSafety commission. “We have a 90 per cent success rate at getting content removed from the internet, that’s a very high success rate,” she said. “And that’s often what victims want, they just want the content taken down.” Ms Grant said fines and criminal provisions were also on the table for offenders, and the office would work together with victims to pursue those options should the victim want to. China flags willingness to ‘retake Taiwan’ with aggressive tactics

Sydney Morning Herald International Editor Peter Hartcher says the Chinese communist party has offered a “deliberate signal” that they are prepared to ramp up aggressive tactics in a bid to rejoin Taiwan to China. Mr Hartcher told Sky News that Chinese leaders left out a “critical part of its traditional phraseology” when discussing the reunification of the two nations during the National People’s Congress. “For decades China has talked about its working towards the peaceful reunification with Taiwan, [but] the word ‘peaceful’ was dropped from the official work report – for the first time in decades,” he said. “This isn’t an accident. "The significance of the one word is that, apart from the authority of the President Xi Jinping himself, there is no more sensitive political issue in China than the status of Taiwan. “This is a very deliberate signal that while China has never renounced the use of force to what it calls ‘retake Taiwan’, it has now changed the emphasis.” Image: AP

New world news from Time: New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern Continues TV Interview During Earthquake

(WELLINGTON, New Zealand) — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern barely skipped a beat when an earthquake struck during a live television interview Monday morning.

She interrupted Newshub host Ryan Bridge to tell him what was happening at the parliament complex in the capital, Wellington.

“We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here Ryan, quite a decent shake here,” she said, looking up and around the room. “But, um, if you see things moving behind me.”

New Zealand sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is sometimes called the Shaky Isles for its frequent quakes.

Monday’s magnitude 5.6 quake struck in the ocean about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Wellington, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit just before 8 a.m. and was felt by thousands of New Zealanders who were getting ready to start their work weeks. It was strong enough to rattle food from shelves and stop train services.

But there were no reports of major damage or injuries.

Australian research reveals virus could have been altered to transmit to humans

An Australian scientist says it is possible that the coronavirus originated in a lab after a study revealed the virus was uniquely adapted to be transmittable to humans. Flinder’s University Professor Nikolai Petrovsky said he has considered a cell-culture experiment gone wrong led to the outbreak as a normal transmission from an animal would be less binding to human cells. Sky News host Sharri Markson said the professor’s research showed the virus was more likely to attack human cells than animal cells.

Families to take ‘common sense approach’ as NSW schools resume

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell says schools are “well prepared” for students to return and are asking families to take a “common sense approach”. Students in NSW will return to full time learning in the classroom from Monday as the state moves to ease lockdown restrictions. Ms Mitchell told Sky News it was expected that all parents should send their children back to school and could be “reassured” by the protocols put in place. She said social distancing measures were being implemented for adults on school grounds, extra cleaning supplies allocated to the classrooms and efficient lockdown processes ready to be rolled out in the case of an outbreak. “We are still saying please keep your kids at home if they are still sick but if they’re well we expect normal attendance to start from today,” she said. “We have got good systems in place and I think parents should be reassured by that. “We have sent very clear guidelines to schools on how they can implement [them].”

‘Alarmist’ COVID-19 reporting lead to a panicked response

Sky News host Rita Panahi says the “hysterical” reporting of COVID-19 has been “designed not to inform but to scare the bejesus off of the audience”. The West has ‘tolerated’ China’s authoritarianism for too long

America’s most senior diplomat says the COVID-19 outbreak has revealed China’s authoritarian nature, including its desire to exert hegemonic influence over countries via projects like the Belt and Road Initiative. Speaking exclusively with Sky News host Rowan Dean, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said western nations should think carefully about doing business with China, considering Beijing’s China’s reflex to “cover up and hide” when faced with a crisis. Secretary Pompeo’s comments come as Victoria plans to push ahead with its plan to sign up to China’s US$1.4 trillion infrastructure program, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The plan is designed to link China with Asia, Europe and Africa via a massive infrastructure investment that will see the widespread construction of railways, motorways and ports. Secretary Pompeo warned any government that signs up to China’s BRI’s will have to scrutinise the deal closely. “Every citizen of Australia that should know that everyone of those Belt and Road projects need to be looked at incredibly closely,” he said. “It is the case, some of them may just be straight up commercial transactions, if so, fine, but nearly each one of them has some cost to it. “There is often money loaned at concessional rates, or conditions placed on the debt documents, or concessions that have to be made to the Chinese communist party in order to get those Belt and Road Initiatives projects built." "Those present real risk, real risk to the people in that region, real risk to country and frankly they build up the capacity of the Chinese communist party to do harm elsewhere.” As the novel coronavirus wreaks worldwide political and economic havoc, Sectary Pompeo said there is growing evidence China and the World Health Organisation “covered up” the full extent of the danger posed by the pathogen when it was in its nascent stage. He said China's tendency to blame everyone else for the pandemic, including Australia, has made it even more necessary for there to be a full and rigorous investigation into the origins of COVID-19, which has infected over 5.2 million and killed at least 340,000 people. “This virus originated in Wuhan China and the Chinese Communist Party has rigorously prevented the entire world of the precise origins,” he said. "How did this begin? How did this have the first human-to-human transmission. All of these things the world deserves to know.”

Victorians granted more freedom as restrictions ease

Beauty and personal care services, entertainment venues and swimming pools will be allowed to reopen from June 1 under a significant easing of restrictions announced by Premier Daniel Andrews. From June 1, the limit on outdoor and indoor gatherings at private residences will be raised to 20 people, and overnight stays can recommence. The restrictions on funerals and weddings will also be lifted to 50 and 20 people respectively. Libraries, youth centres, other community facilities, and entertainment and cultural venues will be allowed to reopen from June 1 but physical distancing and a limit of 20 people per space will apply and venues will be required to keep customers contacts. Mr Andrews credited the discipline of Victorians in addition to the widespread testing of residents for allowing the state government to have “more options” to reopen the state. “By the end of May, we will have well over 200,000 tests. That is what gives us options … The more people that get tested, the more options we have, to not make changes based on guesswork, but instead to make changes based on what the data is telling us,” Mr Andrews said. “This is all about opening up again, but doing so because we have got some new test results, and we can be confident about how much virus is out there Victorian community. It is about taking slow, cautious, steady, graduated and safe steps.”

Coronavirus serving as a ‘mid-life crisis, whether you’re conscious of it or not’

Psychotherapist Melissa Ferrari says people should use the coronavirus lockdown as a chance to reassess what they want in life. “It’s kind of like a version of a mid-life crisis in a way for some,” she said. “We’ve all been under an incredible amount of stress and I think people are really taking stock of their lives and thinking ‘what do I want from my life’.” Dr Ferrari said the coronavirus pandemic created added stress for so much of the population, “whether you’re conscious of it or not”. “We’ve all got that part of the brain that goes into fight or flight response,” she said. Labor wants Australia to go green during economic recovery

The man in charge of Labor’s now axed energy policies which helped lead the party to a catastrophic election defeat last year has dismissed calls for an “immediate” investment into gas industries to save Australia from economic ruin. Labor climate change and energy spokesman Mark Butler told Sky News the government should focus more on renewable energy as he dismissed calls from the National COVID-19 Commission to urgently bolster gas and manufacturing jobs to unlock billions of dollars in GDP. “I’m reluctant to place too much emphasis on leaked reports that have not yet been received by the government, but I think there are some real questions from the government to answer about this report if they are intending to follow it,” he said. “There is no cheap gas in the eastern market if you ask any of the gas companies the cheap gas that we used to rely upon has largely been depleted. “It does seem a little bit singular in its focus on gas rather than a range of other technologies that don’t see to have been considered by this group.” Mr Butler was responsible for a series of uncosted energy policies in which Labor took to the 2019 election, including the 45 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030 which was blamed in part for the party’s electoral demise. He said the Coalition should focus on “cleaner” technologies than gas. “Renewable energy is not just the cheapest but also the cleanest way to renew an ageing and increasingly unreliable electricity system,” he said. “We want the cheapest and most reliable energy system. “Gas by contrast has become more expensive over the last few years because the tripling of gas prices that followed the opening of the LNG export operations in Gladstone. “The market is going to determine this to some degree but obviously also we have got to take into consideration the greenhouse emissions from gas. “You are seeing investors and regulators around the world, including here in Australia, say that investment, economic stimulus needed to bring us out of the COVID pandemic and the economic recession that is flowing from it needs to take consideration of these carbon issues.”
