New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance is set to unveil an overhaul in public transport fares with suggestions there could be an increase in fares during peak-hour periods from July 1. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal recommended a reduction in fares by up to 30 per cent during off-peak periods and an increase by 60 cents a week on fares during 7-9am and 4-6pm to reduce congestion. The Transport Minister said he hoped the changes would incentivise commuters to change their travel habits. Shadow Transport Minister Chris Minns urged the government to reconsider the changes in lieu of the current economic climate. Mr Constance's office said it was unlikely people would pay more and it would not follow IPART's recommendations. Image: News Corp Australia
