Trump accused of ‘overreacting’ in response to Washington protests

US Studies Centre Associate Professor Brendon O’Connor says President Donald Trump displayed a “terrible overreaction” to Black Lives Matter protests, particularly those in Washington. “Trump standing with a bible in hand in front of a church, something we’re not used to with Donald Trump, [he is] not known for being a huge churchgoer,” Mr O’Connor told Sky News. “Therefore [it] seemed like this was something for his benefit – rather than a necessary act for protecting people and protecting property,” he said. “Trump wanted to show a sense of strength, he’d been seemingly feeling humiliated that he’d been in a bunker. “It was not a strong day for Trump, an opportunity for Joe Biden to get on the front foot and suggest that leadership is something different. “That’s important for an alternative president to come forward and say look there’s a different way of calming the nation, of recognising the discrimination within the American society within the police force and moving forward in a more sort of peaceful and cooperative way.” Image: AP
