Chinese Probe Lands on Moon to Collect Samples

China’s Chang’e 5 probe landed on the Moon on Wednesday, December 2, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). The spacecraft successfully landed on Tuesday during a mission to collect the first lunar samples in 44 years, the CNSA said. Chang’e 5’s mission is to gather about two kilograms (about 4.4 pounds) of lunar rocks and soil over a period of two days. It is scheduled to return to Earth in mid-December, the CNSA reported. Footage posted by the CNSA shows Chang’e 5 landing on the Oceanus Procellarum, the largest dark spot on the Moon, according to reports. Credit: China National Space Administration via Storyful
