A suspect was shot by police after setting off “a round of gunfire into the air” at an outdoor concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon, December 13, according to the cathedral and officials. Mark D. Levine, a city councilman, said the suspect appeared to be mentally ill and had climbed scaffolding inside the church at around 4pm, “yelling that he wanted to be killed.” The NYPD said there was an officer-involved shooting on the Upper West Side but did not provide further details.
