COVIDSafe app identifies under 800 cases

Image Matrix Tech Editor Djuro Sen says the government’s COVIDSafe app has not had “a good run” after a federal government report revealed it had identified less than 800 cases. “This report pretty much says what we all thought,” he told Sky News Australia. “We started out early - over 7 million downloads - and then less than 800 people who had the app, who had COVID actually reported it. “And the thousands of thousands of people who had the disease, or the virus, hardly anyone had the app. “So it has not been a good run. “I was critical of the app ... I think we went really fast, early with the app without really thinking it through.” However Mr Sen said he believes the app should be looked at again and harnessed to help tackle the Delta variant.

Athletes’ mental health issues should be treated in the ‘same way’ as physical injuries

Former AFL Kangaroos player Corey McKernan says it is important mental health issues are treated in the “same way” as physical injuries when it comes to athletes. American gymnast Simone Biles pulled out from the Tokyo Olympics due to mental heath issues. “If Simone Biles had actually injured her ankle or hurt her wrist in gymnastics, we wouldn’t think anything of it,” he told Sky News Australia. “And yet when it comes to mental health, we have people really questioning her, why she pulled out. “But it’s about time, and thankfully people are treating it the exact same way a physical injury occurs.” Anyone who may be feeling distressed can contact the following organisations for support. UK vaccine rollout slows in under 25s

The United Kingdom's government has ruled out requiring university students to have COVID passports in order to access services on campus. However, pop up vaccination clinics at locations such as racecourses are one of the methods being used to bring the vaccine to younger people. This comes amid concerns 'no jab, no job' policies will emerge as companies are warned against forcing staff to get vaccinated, which could amount to a criminal offence. The government has said while it welcomes encouraging staff- it will be down to employers to consider how forcing them to get the jab would fit with legal obligations when it comes to employment law or data protection. Employment lawyer Karen Jackson said "any employer that says I'm going to do it, they are going to face legal claims in the future."

It will take a ‘massive effort’ to reach the PM’s 70 per cent vaccination target

AMA NSW Chair Dr Michael Bonning says it will take a “massive effort” for Australia to reach the Prime Minister’s target of having 70 per cent of the eligible population vaccinated. Mr Morrison has confirmed there will be “special rules” which apply to vaccinated persons after 70 per cent of Australia’s eligible population is inoculated and the country moves to Phase B of the roadmap out of the pandemic. “We have good models of that from overseas to see what it looks like when you start reaching higher and higher vaccine numbers," Dr Bonning told Sky News Australia. “Now overseas we still haven’t seen those numbers yet of 70 per cent of your eligible population vaccinated that the PM is looking for so it’s going to take a massive effort. “But it’s also going to take an effort that relies upon people being motivated to do this. “Not just motivated by what’s going on overseas or the GP contacting them, but actually by getting out there and saying I need to find somewhere to get vaccinated.”

Decision to redirect Pfizer doses from rural NSW to Sydney schools meets criticism

The national body representing regional doctors has criticised the decision to redirect Pfizer vaccines from rural New South Wales towns to senior school students in Sydney. The Rural Doctors Association of Australia said it will put critical health services in those communities at risk. RDAA President Dr John Hall said it was “completely unconscionable” to redirect up to 40,000 doses from the country to the city when there are health workers in the regions who are yet to be vaccinated. Dr Hall said there was a volume frontline, aged care and GP works who have not had access to a vaccine in regional NSW.

Rescued River Otter Pup Finds New Home at Oregon Zoo

An orphaned river otter pup who was found and rescued is receiving care at Oregon Zoo in Portland. Footage shared by the zoo shows the “playful” 10-week-old female otter pup in the care of veterinarians. The zoo said the otter was found on June 3 along a road in Deer Island and was admitted for immediate care to Portland Audubon Wildlife Care Center. After the pup’s mother could not be located, she was transferred to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast, and because of her habituation to people, was deemed non-releasable by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. On July 13, after the pup’s health was stabilized, she was transferred to Oregon Zoo, where she is receiving care from the Veterinary Medical Center. Oregon Zoo staff plan to introduce her soon to other resident river otters while searching for her permanent home. The zoo said the pup is estimated to be 10 weeks old and weighs about seven pounds. “She’s a little bit larger than a kitten and just about as playful,” said Shelly Pettit, who supervises the North America section of the Oregon Zoo.“She’s already a great swimmer and knows how to dry herself off. She’s quite a doll.” Credit: Oregon Zoo via Storyful

The New South Wales government is split over how to curb the COVID outbreak in Sydney. The Greater Sydney lockdown was scheduled to end on Friday but it is clear that will not be the case after NSW recorded 145 new local infections on Monday with 51 infectious in the community. At Monday's media conference Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she will be providing updates over the next few days as to what life will look like for New South Wales residents beyond July 31. The crisis cabinet meeting last night lasted for around five-hours with many ministers at odds with each other over what should be done next to manage the outbreak. Some want restrictions to be tightened in suburbs closer to the epicentre of the outbreak and easing in other suburbs.

New Victorian ad tells Sydney to stay at home

The Victorian government has launched a new advertising campaign sternly warning Sydneysiders to stay home and not travel south. The ad is now running in prime TV slots across New South Wales and includes voiceover telling viewers of new restrictions in place 'for extreme risk zones'. It goes on to warn New South Wales residents they cannot get a permit to enter the state. Victoria's opposition has labelled the campaign as "mean spirited" as Sydney grapples with its Delta outbreak. The Andrews government has defended it, saying they are regularly run in other states.

Economy could already be in recession over lockdowns

Leading economists say the lockdowns in Sydney and Melbourne have plunged Australia's economy back into recession. The verdict comes as the government ruled out a reintroduction of last year's JobKeeper program which kept workers attached to their employers. Independent economist Warren Hogan said the traditional definition of a recession - two consecutive quarters with negative growth - is “antiquated” and does not apply during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The New South Wales economy is probably going to contract about five per cent in Q3, which is second only to last year’s contraction in terms of historical magnitude,” he said. “That’ll drag the overall Australian economy down by somewhere between one and three per cent.”

US counties bring back mask mandates

Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says some counties in the United States have brought back mask mandates - with the governor of California encouraging schools to make children wear them. “Los Angeles County and also St Louis County in Missouri, they have mandated mask wearing now in indoor spaces and that’s going to also apply to schools in California,” he told Sky News. “The governor made a ruling that the public schools and private schools, the children have to wear masks whether they’re vaccinated or not. “And then he backtracked a little bit by saying we’re going to let the local school districts implement that and enforce it which I think takes some of the teeth out of it.”

COVID case numbers ‘skyrocketing’ in the United States

Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says the number of COVID-19 infections is “skyrocketing” in the United States, driven by the Delta variant and the amount of unvaccinated people. “It really is primarily the unvaccinated who are getting infected, as you said, 60,000 that is a huge increase from 12,000 less than a couple of weeks or a month ago,” he told Sky News. “It’s skyrocketing – the infection rates – and mostly the Delta variant is driving it. “The Delta variant and the fact that the unvaccinated refuse to get vaccinated.” However, Professor Mathews pointed out “breakthrough variants” were also affecting people who had been fully vaccinated. “In Los Angeles Country alone, 20 per cent of the infections were breakthroughs of those who had already been fully vaccinated,” he said. “So we know that the full vaccination is extremely helpful and it will protect you from going to the hospital, or getting ill or even dying in the vast majority of cases but the breakthrough variants and the results of that leave people a little bit sick, a little bit like the have a cold. “So it’s very well worth it to get vaccinated.”

Snow Leopard at the San Diego Zoo Suspected Positive for COVID-19

A snow leopard at the San Diego Zoo is suspected of being positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that leads to COVID-19, after several initial tests found the pathogen, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said. In a press release, the alliance said the male snow leopard, Ramil, recognizable for his missing eye, had exhibited symptoms including a cough and runny nose, leading care specialists to take fecal samples. The samples were tested by the zoo and returned a positive result. Samples also tested positive at California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS). Additional testing is to be conducted at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL). “The male snow leopard appears to be doing well, and is showing no additional symptoms other than the cough and runny nose,” the alliance wrote in the press release. “He shares his habitat with a female snow leopard and two Amur leopards. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance veterinarians assume these three individuals have also been exposed. They are currently being quarantined in their habitat. Veterinarians are monitoring them closely, and will treat symptoms as they may arise.” Footage shared by the San Diego Wildlife Alliance shows Ramil and a fellow San Diego Zoo resident, female snow leopard Naphisa.
