Biden and Putin hold ‘productive’ second phone call

A second phone call between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin seemed not to achieve any "concrete outcomes" – yet both sides said the conversation was "productive", according to Spectrum News DC Reporter Austin Landis. It comes as the respective leaders of the United States and Russia held a 50 minute phone conversation – at the request of Mr Putin – which "set the tone" for further scheduled talks between the pair in January. Mr Biden raised concerns over the build-up of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border – and said the United States would not tolerate a Russian invasion. "President Biden said that he made it clear to Russia that they cannot invade Ukraine, that there will be serious consequences if they do, including sanctions," Ms Landis said. "Russia responded to that saying that sanctions would be a mistake – so still quite a lot of tension there."

Boris Johnson urges residents to receive booster dose

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson says "up to 90 per cent" of people currently in intensive care with COVID-19 have not had their booster jab. There are 2.4 million eligible double-jabbed people yet to take up the offer of a booster and the "the overwhelming majority" of those in a serious condition in hospital with COVID fall into this category. It comes as the UK reported a record 183,037 new COVID cases. Sky News Australia discussed the issue with the University of Bradford's Dr Liz Breen who said the high number of cases are encouraging residents to come forward for a booster shot. "This package whereby you need to get your vaccination but also you need to do your testing has really been sold quite heavily by the government – and people have been buying into that," Dr Breen told Sky News Australia.

‘Hundreds’ Wait Outside Library in Annapolis for At-Home COVID Test Kits

A line of people waited outside a public library at a mall in Annapolis, Maryland, on Wednesday, December 22, amid high demand for COVID testing kits in the area. By Wednesday morning, however, most sites had run out and only eight locations were still distributing kits. The surge in demand and limited supply prompted the county to announce on Tuesday that only two boxes would be available to each household. Demand for At-Home Rapid Tests Surges in Maryland

A line stretched around the Westfield Annapolis shopping mall in Maryland on Wednesday morning, December 22, as county officials distributed a dwindling supply of free at-home rapid COVID-19 testing kits on a first-come, first-served basis. Anne Arundel County said free test kits would be distributed at the mall that day between 10 am and 4 pm. This video was posted just before 10:15 am by Lauren Smith, who in recent days tweeted that COVID-19 was spreading through her family “like wildfire.” The county’s website initially listed 17 locations where at-home rapid antigen tests could be picked up at various times between Monday and Friday. By Wednesday morning, however, most sites had run out and only eight locations were still distributing kits. The surge in demand and limited supply prompted the county to announce on Tuesday that only two boxes would be given to each household. Credit: Lauren Smith via Storyful

At least eight million Australians will regift this Christmas

Around eight million Australians will regift this Christmas, according to new research by Lavazza. Body language expert Steve van Aperen says often these gifts are those we have that we don't have any need for. "What I think the funniest statistic, is, is not only do nearly 50 per cent of people regift, one in five regift back to the originator of the person who gave the gift in the first place," Mr van Aperen told Sky News Australia. He said there are multiple ways to tell through someone's body language whether they actually like a gift. "The first thing I would look for is conflict between what they say and what their body language is, in fact, expressing. "Secondly, we need to look for deviations from their normative behaviour. "The other area we need to look for, is – believe it or not, blink rate – we know through research, when a person lies their blink rate increases six to eightfold after the delivery of the deception."

‘Immense’ Plume Spewed From Spanish Volcano Amid ‘Strong Explosive Activity’

An “immense volcanic plume” towered over La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, after “strong explosive activity” at the erupting Cumbre Vieja volcano sent ash, gas, and lava skyward at around 6 pm on Monday, December 13, officials said. Footage taken by researchers with the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) from a mountain trail north of the volcano shows a towering column of ash and gas taking form as lava spews out and tumbles down the volcano’s flanks. In the 86 days since the volcano began erupting on September 19, almost 7.5 square miles (11.93 km sq.) of the island had been affected by the volcano, and at least 2,910 buildings had been damaged beyond repair, emergency officials said. More than 540 people were being sheltered in hotels as of December 13, officials added. Credit: INVOLCAN via Storyful

Major Snowstorm Sweeps Over California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains

A major snowstorm was creating hazardous conditions across California’s northern Sierra Nevada mountain range overnight into Monday, December 13, and forecasters said conditions would worsen later that day. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento forecasted 2 to 3 feet of snow to fall in many mountain areas, but between 3 and 6 feet of snow at elevations above 7,000 ft. Researchers at UC Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Laboratory (CSSL), situated at an elevation of 6,894 feet in Donner Pass, near Truckee, said 18.7 inches of snow had fallen at the station in 24 hours, bringing their 48-hour storm total up to 23.5 inches – “and it is still DUMPING outside,” they wrote on Twitter. This video shows heavy snow falling at the lab as they took their measurements Monday morning, the researchers said. The National Weather Service discouraged drivers from traveling through the mountains, warning that the “hazardous conditions” would get worse later on Monday, “with heavier snow and gusty winds.” Chain controls were in effect for several routes, including Interstate 80 between Drum Forebay and Truckee, meaning all vehicles were required to have tire chains or snow tires. Kitten Rescued After Spending Days in Phoenix Storm Drain

A six-week-old kitten was saved from a storm drain in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 2, after multiple efforts by officials, with rescuers saying the cat was in the sewer for more than a week. The Phoenix Fire Department said “multiple calls were received” about “meowing” coming from an underground pipe at the corner of 20th Street and Indian School Road. A crew from Phoenix Fire Station 61 teamed up with the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) to remove the kitten, but for two days he evaded rescue attempts, the AHS said in a press release. The cat was eventually rescued using a “humane trap to help lure him to safety,” the AHS said. The animal rescue organization said the cat was “safe and sound” and was “recovering in AHS’ animal trauma hospital after reportedly having been trapped in the storm drain for more than a week.” The kitten was found to be “underweight, with fleas and a tummy ailment that will need treatment in an AHS Foster Hero home, where he can also get some much-needed socialization and love,” the AHS added. “It is expected he will need a couple weeks of medical care to get up to weight and healthy enough to be up for adoption,” they said.
