Victorian agriculture minister Jaala Pulford speaking to media at Lort Smith Animal Hospital in Melbourne's north about legislation to stop puppy farms. Newborn puppies and kittens won't be allowed to be sold in pet shops under new laws to take effect from July 1. Only dogs older than six months and cats more than eight weeks, sourced from registered pounds, animal shelters or enrolled foster carers, will be available to buy. Pulford visits kittens and dogs at the hospital before making the announcement. Animal rights activist Debra Tranter says it is great Victoria is leading the way in banning puppy farms.
