Northern Ireland has now matched Belgium's record for time without an elected government, as the political stalemate at Stormont reaches its 589th day. There has been no Northern Ireland executive since January last year, following the collapse of a power-sharing agreement between the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein. A continuing failure to revive a deal has now seen Northern Ireland match - and almost certainly overtake - Belgium's similarly long period without a government in 2010-11.
