NSW trial of in-ground lights to prevent pedestrians from illegally crossing the road while using their phone won't go ahead, after a UNSW report found it was not an effective way of preventing accidents. News Corp Journalist John Rolfe told Sky News the lights had a significant effect in preventing people crossing the road during a red light, but did not target those who were looking down at their phones, which was the point of the trial. In his report, Mr Rolfe also uncovered a German city which installed the lights to prevent phone related traffic incidents similarly decided against a full roll-out. The trial cost the government $250,000.
