Motorists could be charged to drive through major cities

There are calls for a new approach to unclogging the major cities with the Grattan Institute saying it's time to introduce "congestion charging". The think tank has suggested Australian cities follow London, Singapore and New York and charge road users for entering the CBD in the morning and afternoon peak periods. The report suggested a modest charge could result in 40 per cent fewer cars entering the central area during peak congestion periods, and speed increases of about one per cent across the network.
