Out-of-Control Bushfire Turns Morning Sky Black as Trapped Residents Shelter in Bermagui, New South Wales

An emergency-level bushfire threatened communities in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales, on Tuesday, December 31. Residents and holidaymakers in the south coast town of Bermagui spent their New Year’s Eve sheltering from the 29,000-hectare Badja Forest Road bushfire, as smoke and ash from the blaze turned the sky black. “If you are in the area of Bermagui, Regatta Point, Wallaga Lake and Wallaga Lake Heights, it is too late to leave. Seek shelter as the fire approaches. Protect yourself from the heat of the fire,” a warning from the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said. Hot, dry and windy conditions fuelled at least seven emergency-level blazes and another seven ‘watch and act’-level fires burning across the state on Tuesday. Credit: Caitlin Nobes via Storyful
