Locals and holidaymakers were forced to seek shelter in Mallacoota, Victoria, as bushfires burned in and around the coastal town on December 31. The morning sky was at times turned black and a deep red as the air filled with smoke and ash from the fires, according to reports. Several buildings were on fire in Mallacoota, according to a Victorian emergency services update around midday on the Tuesday, while a nearly 73,000-hectare blaze burned just to the west of the town.
