The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chair Rod Sims says Australia “cannot have any more plant closures due to overpriced gas on the domestic market”. Mr Sims told Sky News “in a few years we might be facing serious shortages of gas”. “The market is very tight, and what we are seeing is international prices, when you translate them back to Australia, they are below $7,” he said. “Domestic buyers are paying anywhere from $9 and $10, and that’s really a shocking situation and does lead to plant closures. “We are calling on companies who have got gas to make sure that they’re selling it domestically at reasonable prices.”
