An inclusive and decentralised power the ‘best bet’ for Taliban’s long-term stability
CNN International Diplomatic Editor Nick Robertson says the Taliban are going to have a tough time controlling the whole of Afghanistan with terrorist groups such as ISIS-K proposing a challenge to their leadership. "Pakistani Taliban who are based in Afghanistan who are ramping up their attacks on Pakistan want to take control of the border area inside Pakistan – they're going to be a problem for the Taliban gong forward," he said. "A decentralised type of power that is really actually inclusive is the best bet for the Taliban for long term stability but their ability to actually prioritise that, deliver it - I think is difficult." Mr Robertson said the Taliban would also face economic struggles given their strict conservative interpretation of sharia law which prevents them from paying interest on loans.

Joe Biden blames Trump administration over timing of Afghanistan withdrawal
President Joe Biden has blamed Donald Trump over the timing of the Afghanistan withdrawal. The president defended his strategy in an address to the nation, the day after the final troops left. However Mr Biden did not go as far as admitting that anything went wrong with his administration's withdrawal strategy. The only assumption that failed in his eyes in this address was that the Afghan government had fallen – but he was adamant that they had a contingency plan for that too.

‘It was time to end this war’: President Joe Biden addresses US on Afghanistan withdrawal
US President Joe Biden has defended his administration's decision to end America's role in the conflict in Afghanistan, stating he was not going to "extend this forever war". This was the president's first public address following the final withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan on August 31. "Remember why we went to Afghanistan in the first place? Because we were attacked by Osama Bin laden and Al-Qaeda on September 11th 2001 and they were based in Afghanistan," Mr Biden said. He said America had already delivered justice to Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda over a decade ago yet stayed for another decade. The question must be asked, the president said, if America would still have gone to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban if the 9/11 attack was from Yemen – "even though the Taliban controlled Afghanistan in 2001". "I believe the honest answer is no. "That's because we had no vital interest in Afghanistan other than to prevent an attack on America's homeland and our friends. "We succeeded in what we set out to do in Afghanistan over a decade ago. then we stayed for another decade – it was time to end this war."

Afghan Evacuees Arrive in Kosovo Before Transit to United States
More than 100 evacuees from Afghanistan were welcomed on Sunday, August 29, to Pristina, Kosovo, where they would be temporarily sheltered before being resettled in the United States, Kosovo’s government said. Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Svecla said the 111 arrivals were flown from Germany to Kosovo’s Pristina International Airport by the US military, and included people who had worked with NATO in Afghanistan along with their family members. Further evacuees were due to fly into Kosovo on Monday, Svecla said. Kosovo had agreed to house up to 2,000 Afghans while they await resettlement in the US, said Blerim Vela, Chief of Staff to Kosovar President Vjosa Osmani, on August 25. Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he was “honored to greet Afghan citizens.” “When it comes to a humanitarian issue, when it comes to our partners and allies, such as the United States and NATO, then the question is not why, but we just say how,” Kurti said in a statement. “I told our guests they are safe and welcome here, and that I will see them soon to make sure every effort of hospitality is being made,” Kurti said. Both the US Ambassador to Kosovo Philip S Kosnett and UK Ambassador Nicholas Abbott said they were “honored” to be present at the Pristina airport during the arrival of the first group of NATO-affiliated Afghan evacuees. “By temporarily hosting Afghans en route to permanent homes elsewhere, Kosovo is not only saving lives, but giving Afghans an opportunity to build new ones,” Kosnett tweeted. Kosovo’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Monday said that the camp would be closed to both national and international media for a period of time “for the sake of safety and preservation of Afghanistan refugees’ privacy.” Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful

"There's a real economic and health imperative for our country to move ahead with the plan as agreed at National Cabinet," Mr Frydenberg told Sky News Australia. "We've got national accounts out this week and it will show the impact lockdowns are having on the economy. "We know from the figures released about the mental health emergencies in both Victoria and NSW, our two locked down states, that they've skyrocketed. Mr Frydenberg said the numbers are "quite devastating" and should be a "wake-up call" for the nation surrounding the "shadow pandemic". The Treasurer also said the economy is losing around $2 billion per week of economic activity as a result of the Victoria and NSW lockdowns. The federal government alone was putting more than a billion dollars of financial support in the economy for businesses and households in NSW and Victoria, which would be "unsustainable" if kept up indefinitely. "This is an unsustainable amount of economic support for our economy to see indefinitely," he said. "We just can't keep doing it and that's why we have to bring those stringent lockdowns to an end, bring those border closures to an end and open in a COVID-safe way."

Jane Halton discusses her career, COVID-19 and the public service
Chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, Jane Halton, has spoken about COVID-19, a life in the public service, Australia’s road to reopening and a prank in her university days that caused a diplomatic incident. Often described as “not the normal public servant”, Ms Halton was appointed as a Commissioner of the National COVID-19 Commission Advisory Board in March 2020. Sky News host Chris Smith said Ms Halton is someone who “cuts to the chase, gets things done, sums up things pretty quickly – all the things the public service is not very good at”. “I’ve always found that people actually value you being able to talk to them directly, being able to be honest with people, and certainly in all the interactions I’ve had with politicians of both persuasions but also with the public – I think very often people would just really rather you level with them, and you tell them the truth,” Ms Halton said.

Western Sydney community ‘sick’ of being treated like ‘outcasts’
Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Jason Clare says there is "resentment" within the western Sydney community who are being subject to tougher restrictions than the rest of the city. Sydneysiders who live in 12 COVID-hit local government areas (LGAs) have been barred from leaving their homes from 9pm to 5am. Residents in those LGAS have also been limited to just one hour of exercise a day. Mr Clare told Sky News Australia the community are sick of being treated like "outcasts" with a lot of people "angry" that they are copping the blame. "Western Sydney didn't cause this nightmare, it was caused because Sydney was locked down too late," he said. "If it was locked down when the virus was in Bondi, people in here Bankstown wouldn't be suffering now." The member for Blaxland then blamed Prime Minister Scott Morrison for "not buying enough vaccines".

Australia yet to confirm how many left behind in Afghanistan
Australian officials are waiting to confirm how many citizens and visa holders have been left in Afghanistan after withdrawing forces. Australian troops made it out of the country hours before the ISIS-K suicide bombing after intelligence warnings came of a potential terror attack. The last Australian plane departed the airport just four hours before the attack and it is understood to have been delayed, allowing soldiers to track down a woman and her three-year-old child. The final flight brings Australia’s 20-year-long military presence in Afghanistan to an end.

Afghans try to flee despite bomb attacks
Despite a suicide bomber claiming the lives of so many outside Kabul airport, the catastrophic attack has not deterred people from trying to flee. More than 100 people were killed in the bombings, including 13 United States military personnel. The gates have now closed along with the window for evacuation - but there is an ongoing threat Islamic State may strike again. One man caught up in the attack with his children is not prepared to risk evacuating again - speaking from Kabul, he described how he was trying to help his sisters get home to Australia, and they are now stuck. Afghans evacuated to Qatar are devasted by the news, with one NGO worker unable to get hold of friends who were at the airport at the time of the attack. After nearly two weeks of chaos in Kabul, more than 100,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan.

Pentagon confirms Kabul attack was a single bomb
The death toll from the terror attack at Kabul’s crowded international airport has risen to at least 95, with hundreds more injured. Pentagon officials have revealed the ISIS-K assault was carried out by a single suicide bomber outside the Abbey Gate at the airport and there was no second bomb at the Baron Hotel as was initially thought. The Pentagon also confirmed United States-led evacuations will continue until the deadline on August 31 but more attacks are expected. Officials believe the biggest threat to airport are rocket attacks or car bombs.

Footage Shows Activity at Kabul Airport One Day After Deadly Attack
Footage taken at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on Friday, August 27 — one day after a suicide attack killed dozens of Afghans and 13 US service members — shows some people gathered outside the airport and an aircraft taxiing inside. Pentagon authorities on Friday said a sole suicide bomber was responsible for attack, which took place in the vicinity of the airport’s Abbey Gate. Defense officials had previously believed a second blast took place near the Baron Hotel, but said reports of that incident were erroneous. Speaking at the Pentagon, Maj Gen Hank Taylor said evacuations were continuing. Eighty-nine US and partner flights left on Thursday from the airport, carrying roughly 12,500 people, Taylor said. Fire Crews Battle Blaze at High-Rise Building in China’s Dalian City
A fire broke out and spread through “exterior wall materials” on a high-rise residential building in China’s northeastern city of Dalian, in Liaoning province, on Thursday, August 27, prompting a large emergency response, local officials said. The Dalian Fire-Rescue Department said it was alerted to the blaze at Block B of the Kaixuan International building just after 4 pm, and had dispatched 366 firefighters and 68 fire trucks to the scene. Numerous eyewitness videos circulated online showed flames engulfing large sections of the building. According to Chinese state media, no casualties had been reported. Shanghai Daily reported that the fire started in an apartment on the 19th floor, and that the occupant had alerted the property management. Fire crews deployed a 101-meter (331-foot) elevated platform to douse flames at higher levels of the building, video from the fire department showed, while a camera-mounted drone was flown up to observe progress. Further video showed beams from firefighters’ flashlights as they worked to extinguish the remains of the fire on upper levels of the building, the department said. Just after 9.30 pm local time, the fire department said “the fire on the top floor” was under control. At 10 pm, it said there was “no visible fire on the outer wall on the northeast side of Block B.” At 11 pm, the fire department said the fire had been extinguished. Death toll set to rise from Kabul terror attacks
The death toll is set to rise from terrorist attacks which took place outside Kabul international airport where thousands were gathered. At least 72 people are dead and 140 injured after the first blast went off at Abbey terminal gate outside the airport where Australia, American, and British troops had been stationed. The second explosion is believed to have been a car bomb located approximately one kilometre from the airport at the Baron Hotel and it is believed some American forces were posted there. There are reported to be foreigners, children, Taliban members, and 12 United States military personnel among the casualties. The explosions have led to the withdrawal of Australian rescue efforts and defence force personnel but American and British efforts will continue. ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Footage Shows Large Crowds Near Kabul Airport Prior to Deadly Attacks
Large crowds were seen close to Kabul’s international airport on August 26, hours before attacks in the area claimed the lives of dozens of Afghans and at least 12 US service members. At a press conference, General Kenneth F McKenzie Jr, commander of United States Central Command (CENTCOM), said bombs exploded by the Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport and in the area of the Baron Hotel “which is immediately adjacent,” and that gunmen opened fire on civilians after the blasts. He said US authorities believe an affiliate of Islamic State, Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), was responsible for the attack. As the press briefing was ongoing, it was reported that Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement disseminated via one its media arms, Amaq News Agency. ADF evacuates over 2,600 from Afghanistan
It is believed dozens of Australians and around 1,000 Afghans with Australian visas are stuck in Kabul unable to reach the airport. Chaos continues in the capital as the deadline looms and the Taliban tries to stop the departure of the educated elite. A senior Australian government official says RAAF flights could be sustained until Friday before making way for thousands of allied troops to depart. A third planeload of evacuees has arrived in Australia, with around 2,650 airlifted by the ADF so far. While each flight out is dangerous, the number rescued is now far in excess of what the ADF had hoped, but it is believed there are still many people who need saving. America has already evacuated over 70,000 people - many of them women and children.

Back-Burning Operations Continue as White Rock Lake Wildfire Rages in British Columbia
Firefighters in British Columbia worked to gain the upper hand on the vast White Rock Lake Fire on Tuesday, August 24, using planned ignition operations to control the fire’s perimeter, BC Wildfire Service said. As of Wednesday, the White Rock Lake Fire was 81,300 hectares (314 square miles) in size. Footage shared by the BC Wildfire Service shows planned ignition operations Tuesday. The service said on Facebook that successful efforts Tuesday were “critical” to gaining containment in areas of the fire’s perimeter “that are inoperable and unsafe for ground crews and heavy equipment to work.” “These operations remove fuels that would otherwise burn at a high intensity and instead allow fire management personnel to bring the fire down to pre-established control lines on their terms when conditions are favorable to a relatively low intensity understory fire, with very little tree mortality,” the wildfire service explained in the Facebook post. The successful “small-scale” ground and aerial ignition missions Tuesday took place along the northeastern flank of the fire’s perimeter, north of Newport Beach, officials said. Crews would work on the fire perimeter near Terrace Mountain and above Shorts Creek on Wednesday, officials wrote. Credit: BC Wildfire Service via Storyful

Dozens missing after Tennessee floods
A search continues for dozens missing in central Tennessee after flash floods swept across the state, and residents attempt to recover what is left of their homes. One woman recalls the tragic moments before flood waters swept away her seven-month-old twins, saying the twins' father tried to hold on to them before water filled up their Tennessee home. Saturday's record-breaking rain killed more than 20 people in central Tennessee and officials expect the death toll to climb with many people still missing. Rescue teams continue to comb through piles of debris and navigate washed-out roads in hopes of finding anyone swept away by the flood. The Red Cross says more than 90 people stayed in shelters on Sunday, with emergency management officials estimating hundreds of homes could be uninhabitable.

Frydenberg: ‘Fate of the country’ rests on national reopening plan
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the premiers and chief ministers need to stick to the plan for reopening which they agreed to at National Cabinet because the “fate of the county” rests on it. “This is about the fate of the country,” he told Sky News Australia. “This is about the future of our communities. This is about the strength and the resilience of our economy. “We know that we cannot live in the world where we’re expecting to reach zero COVID. Zero COVID forever is unrealistic. “They’re not my words, they’re the words of the medical experts at the Doherty Institute and therefore it’s incumbent upon the premiers and the chief ministers to stick to the plan which was agreed at National Cabinet. “If we don’t open up at 70-80 per cent … when do we open up? “People need hope, and the plan is that hope.”

Government expands small business loan scheme eligibility
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says increased support is now available for small businesses as the COVID loan scheme no longer requires businesses to have been on JobKeeper during the March quarter. “This loan scheme has already been very successful,” Mr Frydenberg told Sky News Australia. “More than 70,000 loans have been delivered, worth more than $6 billion. “Now there had been a requirement that those recipients had been on JobKeeper during the March quarter - we’ve removed that requirement. “Obviously they need to have been impacted by COVID, but we’re providing up to $5 million loans for up to 10 years with the first two years repayment free. “Now that is a decision to enter into those loan agreements with the banks - guaranteed by the government - that individual businesses will make. “No doubt this money will help with working capital, it will help businesses expand.”

Lockdowns impacting student progress
The impact of extended school closures have been revealed as preliminary results were released for the 2021 NAPLAN tests. Students suffered the most in the nation's most locked-down state - as Victoria lagged behind after spending almost 150 days learning from home. Melburnians trailed in overall progress while year 9 students in New South Wales recorded their worst performance for reading since the tests began. It has been revealed one in 10 pupils did not reach the national minimum standard - a drop of 4.7 percent - after schools across Greater Sydney were closed at the start of term three. On a national scale the closures did not have a significant impact - with average scores largely unchanged from 2019 - and slight improvements for year 3 and 5 reading and year 7 writing.
