US labour market defies Omicron case rise

The United States economy created more jobs than expected in January despite business disruptions caused by a rise in COVID-19 cases. According to the US labour department, 467,000 jobs were added in January and the unemployment rate now sits at four percent. President Joe Biden says the better than expected figures show “America is back to work” but employment is still two point nine million jobs below its pre-pandemic peak.
