New legislation is being considered by the Northern Territory government that would prevent media from covering matters involving juvenile offenders. The move is being debated at a scrutiny committee hearing after it was recommended by the royal commission into child protection and detention in the NT. The NT is currently the only jurisdiction in Australia where juvenile offenders who are before the youth court can be named and have their images shown, although in the majority of cases a suppression order is put in place.
