A terminally ill South Australian man has been awarded a record $3 million payout after he was exposed to asbestos dust. Mathew Werfel, 42, was exposed to the deadly material while pulling down fences and renovating two homes between the late 1990s and early 2000s. The South Australian Employment Tribunal judgment found construction company James Hardie failed to properly warn the public about the risks associated with its cement products. Mr Werfel was diagnosed with terminal cancer after discovering a lump in his groin in 2017.
