EU to protect food names in non-negotiable trade deal

Australian cheesemakers could soon be forced to stop using several traditional names including feta, gruyere and gorgonzola, as free trade talks with the European Union enter their final stage. The government is set to unveil a list of 236 products the EU wants preserved under the geographical indications program on Tuesday. Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said Australia did not like the idea of a geographical indications program, but it was a non-negotiable element for Europe and negotiations on the deal had been ongoing for the past year.
