US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the “largest single-state worksite enforcement action” in US history was carried out at several locations in Mississippi on August 7. The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi said in a statement that 680 “aliens” were detained by Homeland Security Investigations special agents. Those detained would be scheduled to appear before a federal immigration judge to determine whether or not they will be deported, the statement said. Local residents posted footage on Facebook showing people in Homeland Security Investigations vests outside plants in Morton, and other officers questioning people in traffic stops. This footage, taken by Iris Nuñez in a Morton plant, show ransacked break rooms and piles of chicken meat left on tables. “I went into one of the polleras [chicken-processing plants] to gather belongings of people who are very afraid. We’re trying to locate children whose parents were taken and will leave school and may not find anyone at home,” said Nuñez in a message to Storyful. Credit: Iris Nuñez via Storyful
