Weakening national security would be ‘completely reckless’

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says any suggestion of weakening Australia’s national security legislation would be “completely reckless and irresponsible”. On Tuesday Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus told Sky News "some national security laws should be rescinded" due to the declining threat of Islamic terrorism. Mr Dreyfus justified his call for the possible watering down of security laws by pointing to comments from Duncan Lewis, claiming the ASIO Chief had reported the terror threat was lessening. Mr Cormann told Sky News the government remained committed to keeping Australians safe and ensuring the national security laws were “as strong as ever”. “It really is incumbent on Anthony Albanese to pull his Shadow Attorney-General into line,” he said. “Does he support this proposition that we should be weakening our national security laws on the basis that somehow the terrorism threat level has plateaud?” Image: News Corp Australia
