Two major fires on the New South Wales south coast merged on Monday, December 23, with the combined blaze covering around 180,000 hectares. Three emergency warnings were issued for the Currowan fire burning in the Shoalhaven region on Saturday, December 21. On Monday, the New South Wales Rural Fire service announced that the large-scale fire had merged with the Tianjara fire burning to the north. Together, the fires reportedly formed an 80 kilometre-long fire front. Dozens of homes and other buildings had been destroyed by the fires. A smaller fire, which covered around 1,200 hectares late on Monday morning, was burning at nearby Comberton. In this video, filmed on December 22, a large waterbombing aircraft can be seen dropping its load during operations in the Shoalhaven area.
