Mitt Romney becomes first senator to backstab own party’s president

Republican Mitt Romney has become the only senator in US history to vote to convict and remove from office a president from his own party — breaking an otherwise party-line vote. In President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Senator Romney turned his back on the Republicans on the first charge, abuse of power, resulting in a vote of 52-48. “The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust,” he said. Senator Romney returned to party lines for the second charge, obstruction of Congress, with a vote of 53-47. Image: Getty
