The United States Studies Centre’s Dr Charles Edel says the coronavirus crisis will not shift the date of the US general election - due to go ahead in November. “What is going to have to change is how the voting is taking place,” he said. "It's the American states not the federal government which set the procedures for how votes are taken - on a state by state basis." Dr Edel said states were considering how to accommodate the new COVID-19 challenge, including mail-in options, early voting and extending the voting deadline. “That’s something the states are trying to figure out very rapidly at this point,” he said.
