Govt must work to ‘maintain the discipline’ as transmission rate slows

Cornerstone Group Senior Director James Cullen says it is “really important” for the government to “put away ideology and look at what worked” for slowing the spread of the coronavirus across the nation. Mr Cullen told Sky News “with the low transmission rate and low death rate” Australians were not as exposed to the reality of the coronavirus as other countries. He said “the challenge now for government is going to be actually to say ‘no we need to maintain the discipline particularly around those restrictions and those restrictions around business operating’”. “We are going to need to see, in due course, some of those restrictions come back so the economy can start to open up again and we can look at making sure we can get people back into work”. He said the governmetn should take advantage of an “almost once in a generation opportunity” and reform unsound policies as it works to settle the country’s sizeable debt after the pandemic. “Take everybody with you and start to repair some of the debt and lift the economy and get people back in employment,” he said.
