‘Inherent tension’ between Trump and governors over restrictions

United States correspondent Cameron Stewart says there will likely be ongoing conflict between President Donald Trump and the state governors over the relaxing of restrictions. The president made indications that he wanted the economy to be opened by May 1, however he received resistance from the state governors over the move. Mr Stewart told Sky News “state governors really control when you ease these social restrictions” and they are “very much more cautious” than Trump. "There is no way that state governors like Andrew Cuomo in New York City will advocate an early opening given the terrible death toll that they’ve had," he said. “I think we’re going to have this inherent tension between the governors and Trump as to when the economy reopens." US health authorities have warned if the economy is opened too soon, the country could be subjected to a second wave of the virus. “If Donald Trump is seen to advocate a get-back-to-work ethos and he finds three months from now there is a second wave right near the election, I mean that could be certainly terrible for him politically,” he said.
