Political correctness is ‘disgusting and we have to stand up and fight it’

Sky News host Rowan Dean says political correctness has a “creeping and tentacle-like grip around the throat of comedy that just gets tighter and tighter", adding "it's disgusting and we have to stand up and fight it". In a crusade to end political correctness in comedy, Mr Dean argued it was imperative to understand that comedy, by its nature, offended people. “Comedy by its very essence nearly always – unless it’s bland like the stuff you get in Christmas crackers – there is going to be a point to it, there is going to be something that may offend,” he said. “Who are these people telling us what we can and cannot enjoy? What gives them the God-given right to say?” With the Black Lives Matter movement adding to the conversation, Mr Dean said it was “absolutely critical to understand why blackface is so offensive to African Americans”. “The history of slavery and the history during the 20s when white artists would use blackface, steal black music and away they would go,” he said. “We have to be mature enough, intelligent enough and honest enough to be able to say ‘OK that is offensive, now if you want to go down that path, be very very careful and know what the risks are’.” 'The Death of the Aussie Larrikin?' premieres on Sky News Australia at 8pm Tuesday, June 16.
