Tanker Aircraft Navigates Arizona Mountains to Drop Flame Retardant

A DC-10 tanker aircraft performed a low-flying maneuver in a gap in the Santa Catalina Mountains to drop flame retardant on the Bighorn Fire on June 11. This footage was taken by Rocky LaRose from a perch in the vicinity of Pima Canyon, Arizona. Coronado National Forest authorities said the 14,675-acre Bighorn Fire in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, was 22 percent contained by the morning of June 15. According to reports, residents in nearby Mt Lemmon were asked to prepare for evacuation in case the fire grew. The area was under “set” orders, meaning residents were urged to “voluntarily leave or be prepared to evacuate.” The fire was ignited by lightning on Pusch Ridge in the Coronado National Forest late on Friday, June 5, local media reported.
