Police Bust Attempt to Smuggle Across Closed Queensland Border in Car’s Boot

A man from New South Wales was fined after trying to enter Queensland in the boot of a vehicle on July 19, as the state’s border remains shut due to the coronavirus pandemic. Queensland Police say the man was discovered in the boot of the car after a search in Wallangarra in the state’s Southern Downs region. The man was fined $4,003 for attempting to enter Queensland without a Border Declaration Pass. People travelling into Queensland were required to have a Queensland Border Declaration Pass, which was unobtainable by people from Victoria or COVID-19 hostpots in New South Wales such as Campbelltown and Liverpool in Sydney’s west. Attempts to cross the Queensland border from New South Wales without a permit can result in fines of more than $4,000 or up to six months imprisonment. Queensland Police say 16 people have been charged with failing to comply with the border rules since July 10. Credit: Queensland Police via Storyful
