Australia ‘clearly needs’ a nuclear industry to get to net zero emissions

Australian Nuclear Association's John Harries says the nation “clearly needs” a nuclear industry to fix up the energy system and get to net zero carbon emissions. It comes as NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham says he intends to bring his Bill to lift the state’s ban on nuclear power and uranium mining to a vote when the parliament resumes. Mr Harries told Sky News host Paul Murray the AUKUS submarine deal has “detoxified the word 'nuclear' to an extent” but the legislation prohibiting domestic nuclear energy “desperately” needs to be removed.

London Police Commissioner Says She Is ‘So Sorry’ Over Murder of Sarah Everard by Then-Serving Police Officer

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said that she was “horrified” and “so sorry” following the kidnap, rape, and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard by then-serving police officer Wayne Couzens in March 2021. Couzens, 48, pleaded guilty to murder on July 9. He was given a life sentence on September 30 after a two-day hearing in London at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, known as the Old Bailey. In a statement outside court, Dame Cressida said that trust in the Metropolitan Police Service was “shaken” by Couzens’ actions. “I absolutely know that there are those who feel their trust in us is shaken. I recognize that in some people a precious bond of trust has been damaged. Our dedication to you, our public, remains undiminished. As Commissioner, I will do everything in my power to ensure we learn any lessons,” Dame Cressida said. Everard’s family said they were pleased with Couzens’ life sentence. “Nothing can make things better, nothing can bring Sarah back, but knowing he will be imprisoned forever brings some relief. Wayne Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death. The world is a safer place with him imprisoned,” they said. Credit: Metropolitan Police via Storyful

NSW students to return to school one week early

NSW students will return to the classroom a week earlier than planned. It comes as almost 50 per cent of children between the ages of 12 and 15 have now received their first dose of COVID vaccine. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the decision is because of the high vaccine uptake in NSW, which has allowed the government to review when students can return. Kindergarten, year one and year 12 students will go back on October 18, while those in year two, year six and year 11 will go back on October 25, and the remaining grades will go back on November 1. Senior ministers considered bringing the date forward by two weeks instead but decided on October 18 to give teachers more time to get vaccinated.

Angela Merkel leaves behind legacy but remains to be judged by history

Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel inherited a very stagnant German economy when she rose to power – now it is the fourth largest in the world, according to RMIT International Politics expert Dr Maren Klein. It comes as Germany held its national election today to decide who will replace Angela Merkel – as her time leading the nation comes to a close after 16 years. Dr Klein said Ms Merkel would be remembered for many things amid her tenure as leader of the German people. "She will also definitely be remembered for things like getting out of nuclear energy after Fukushima, she will be remembered for her, in particular, her actions in the 2015 migration crisis," she told Sky News Australia. "However, that is also one of the events that put her at odds with her own party – so it's certainly her legacy but how that's going to be judged by history – well it's history in the making we don't know yet."

‘Trump without the tweets’: Joe Biden unable to persuade EU he’s ‘reliable’

US President Joe Biden has been unable to persuade the European Union that he is any more reliable now than he was when the evacuation failed in Afghanistan, says Curtin University Professor Joe Siracusa. "I think he paid to high a price in alienating France," Prof Siracusa told Sky News Australia. "France hate being regarded as a small power – it still regards itself as a great power ... and they've made it very clear that you can't trust the Americans." "I think the reason President Biden has stumbled is because most of is foreign policy is coming out of the national security establishment that he has. "So a lot of this is driven by people with very narrow focus and they're not doing a very good job – and frankly the president hasn't persuaded anybody in Europe that he's really back." Prof Siracusa recounted an EU chief foreign policy adviser saying all Joe Biden is – is "Trump without the tweets".

German election too close to call

Exit polls in Germany are showing a neck-and-neck race between the centre-left Social Democrats and Angela Merkel's centre-right Christian Democratic Union in the country's general election. The SPD's Olaf Scholz and the CDU/CSU's Armin Laschet are the leading candidates to succeed the veteran chancellor – who is not running after 16 years in the role. Both parties have said they will try to build a governing coalition and will reach out to the minor parties to try and garner support. The process to form a coalition could take months during which time Angela Merkel would remain in office in a caretaker capacity. The latest projections show the SPD holding a marginal lead with 25.2 per cent of the vote – while the CDU/CSU trails at 24.6 per cent – their weakest result since World War Two. Voter turnout was at 78 per cent – up two percentage points on the previous election – and is the highest turnout since 2005. SDP Leader Olaf Scholz had told rapturous supporters the results send a clear mandate for his party to form the next government.

Activist Greta Thunberg has joined thousands of people at a climate rally in Germany ahead of the country's September 26 election. World Food Programme Sounds Alarm Over Afghanistan Hunger Crisis

The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) on September 22 again raised alarm over Afghanistan’s deepening food crisis, reporting that “only five percent of households have enough to eat every day.” The fresh warning came hours ahead of a conference between G20 foreign ministers regarding the situation in Afghanistan, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi and President of Russia Vladimir Putin also discussed Afghanistan during a telephone meeting on September 22, according to the Italian and Russian governments. The “abrupt and unrelenting” economic collapse, severe drought, and the “rapid withdrawal of international aid” had helped fueled a cash crisis in the country, WFP said in a press release. Among the 14 million people facing acute food insecurity were two million children at risk of malnutrition, the organization added. “For the first time, urban residents are suffering from food insecurity at similar rates to rural communities, which have been ravaged by drought twice in the past three years,” the WFP said in a press release. “Only five percent of households in Afghanistan have enough to eat every day, according to recent surveys conducted by WFP, while half reported they had run out of food altogether at least once in the past two weeks.” WFP said it was “racing against the clock” to provide help to people, but said it urgently needed $200 million to buy and prepare food supplies for winter. "If we miss this window the consequences will be catastrophic,” said WFP’s Afghanistan Country Director, Mary-Ellen McGroarty. Footage taken by WFP over two weeks up to September 21 shows children in Kabul being tested for malnutrition, children collecting water from a dry riverbed near Mazar-i-Sharif, and a convoy of WFP vehicles crossing from Pakistan into Afghanistan, carrying what WFP said were supplies for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and young children. The same day, the World Health Organization warned world leaders that Afghanistan’s health system was “on the brink of collapse.” The UN’s humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, announced he was releasing $45 million in funds from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund to keep Afghanistan’s health care facilities “operating through the end of 2021.” Credit: WFP via Storyful
