Peace between Australia and China should be attempted with ‘eyes wide open’

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says he wants peace in Australia-China relations but it cannot be done within "a frame of naivety". It comes as figures on both sides of politics have responded cautiously to an olive branch offered by China’s new ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, as he touched down in Sydney. Mr Xiao described his new role as a “noble mission” and said he was eager to begin working with the Australian government to restore the two countries’ diplomatic relationship. "I'll welcome any approach by China that basically wants to tone things down a bit," Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia. "Yes, I want there to be peace – but I'll do it with eyes wide open."
