At least six people have died in the United States after a cold snap known as a 'polar vortex' grips northern half of the nation causing temperatures to plummet to -20 degrees celsius in some regions. Schools have been closed, flights cancelled and residents are being urged to remain indoors with increasing fears for the homeless being exposed to life-threatening conditions. Frostbite can be succumbed to in as little as five minutes. Conditions are expected to be short-lived, with predictions of temperatures normalising within two days.
