Incoming Agriculture minister Bridget McKenzie says she will focus on finding ‘practical ways’ of solving the skills shortage plaguing rural and regional Australia. Senator McKenzie says the Nationals are open to a dedicated Agriculture visa, in order to entice people from interstate and overseas to work in the country. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed the necessity of an agriculture visa prior to the election. Ms McKenzie told Sky News that the government will work with industry in order to formulate a plan to boost rural productivity. She says industry still ‘talking about’ an Agriculture visa.
