Users urged to update phone in wake of WhatsApp hack

A security flaw has allowed hackers to install surveillance technology on the phones of some WhatsApp users. The vulnerability, which pertains to 'buffer overflow', can allow hackers to access the application remotely in order to run malicious spyware, possibly giving criminals access to chats, photos and contact details. UNSW cyber expert Nigel Phair has told Sky News that most people will not be impacted by this hack, and that users should be 'alert but not alarmed.' He says good ‘device hygiene,’ including frequently updating your app, can protect consumers from malicious spyware.
