Voters rejected Phelps’ ‘Liberal-lite’ label

Incoming Wentworth MP Dave Sharma says his constituents rejected Kerryn Phelps because she was pushing a ‘left-of-centre’ policy agenda. Ms Phelps was the incumbent Wentworth MP after she won the seat during a by-election in 2018, which was sparked after Malcolm Turnbull’s retirement from politics. Mr Sharma won the seat back for the Liberals, prevailing over Dr Phelps 52 to 48 on a two party preferred basis. He told Sky News that Wentworth voters withdrew their support once they realised that Dr Phelps was not ‘Liberal-lite’ candidate.
