“Volunteer firefighters are remarkable individuals”: RFS Commissioner

December 20, 2019. RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons speaks to the media in Sydney after two volunteer firefighters from the Horsley Park brigade were killed in a truck crash on Thursday night. Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, were in a truck convoy near the town of Buxton late on Thursday when a tree fell into their path, prompting the vehicle to roll off the road. Mr Fitzsimmons says volunteer firefighters are "remarkable individuals". "They are ordinary, everyday individuals like you and I, that go out and simply want to serve and protect and make a difference in their local community," he says. "And they don't ever go out in the knowledge that they might not come home from that shift." (AAP VIDEO/Michael Wade)
