Australia ‘must remember the lessons learned’ in first wave

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd says adhering to medical advice is just as important now as it was at the outset of the pandemic in March. The Andrews government imposed a six-week lockdown on Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire from midnight on Wednesday as coronavirus cases surged across the state. Mr Kidd told Sky News the recent spike in case numbers “has come as a real jolt if not a surprise to many people right across the country”. “It really reinforces it for us all just how infectious COVID-19 is and how serious this is when it gets into people who are very vulnerable,” he said. “It’s very important to remember the lessons that we learnt the last time the entire nation was in lockdown, the importance of maintaining that social connection while we’re physically distant from the people that we love. “We’ve always said we expect to see continuing outbreaks of COVID-19 occurring across the country as we live in a world where COVID-19 is raging out of control in many parts of the world, so the measures are just as important in other parts of the country.” Image: AP
