In First for West Virginia, New Bridge Floated Down Ohio River

The Wellsburg Bridge, which will cross the Ohio River, was floated downstream to its new home on the morning of April 26 ahead of its opening in 2022, local media reported. The bridge, which will connect Wellsburg, West Virginia, with Brilliant, Ohio, was carried on four barges. It was the first time in West Virginia history a bridge had been floated into place, WTRF said. According to local media, motorists at the site of the new bridge currently “have to drive eight miles north or 13 miles south to get to the nearest bridge.” Estimated to cost $131 million, construction of the bridge began in April 2018.
