London City Airport switches to digital air traffic control

London City will become the first major airport in the world to use a remote digital air control tower and planes will be directed by staff over 100 kilometres away. The set up has 14 cameras which feed live video all the way to Hampshire where panoramic screens can be overlaid with extra data. The digital interface allows for the augmentation of information air traffic controllers would have had in the traditional tower with more information like radar and weather data. Cybersecurity experts say the remote tower could open up the system to attacks but it is a threat which can be managed.
