Authorities reported on October 31 that seismic activity in the vicinity of La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano was decreasing, but said the flow of lava continued unabated. As of the morning of October 30, lava had claimed some 970 hectares (roughly 3.75 square miles) on the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Analyzing imagery, scientists with Copernicus determined that 2,562 buildings on La Palma have been destroyed by volcanic activity since eruptions began on September 19. This footage, published by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME), shows lava cascading from the volcano on October 31. Credit: IGME via Storyful
