Santa Fe Officials Recover Bullet Discharged by Alec Baldwin on Film Set of Rust

New Mexico officials said during a press conference in Santa Fe on October 27 that they have recovered a bullet believed to have been fired by Alec Baldwin from a prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film set of Rust. This livestream footage shows Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies speaking during the briefing. A lead projectile has been removed from the shoulder of director Joel Souza, who was injured at the scene on October 21, according to Mendoza. Investigators have collected three firearms, including the gun they believe was fired by Baldwin, along with the spent shell casing of the fired bullet, Mendoza said. About 500 rounds of ammunition including blanks, dummy rounds, and suspected live rounds were also collected. Mendoza said there is camera footage from the scene, but no footage of the actual shooting. According to court documents, assistant director Dave Halls handed the gun to Baldwin, who was told it was safe, when in fact it was loaded with live rounds. Investigators said Halls did not know there were live rounds in the gun when he gave it to Baldwin. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had “handled and or inspected” the firearm prior to Baldwin firing the weapon, Mendoza said. It is too early in the investigation to comment on charges, Mendoza said. All options, including criminal charges, are on the table at this point, Carmack-Altwies said. Credit: Santa Fe County Sheriff via Storyful
